mission

local mission

There are many ways to become involved in local mission work. Here are a few commitments that we have made as a congregation. If you'd like to get involved with any of these, please click here.
Food Ministry
A meal is delivered to shut-ins or older persons living alone. The meal usually consists of an entrée, salad, vegetable and dessert. Cooked by members. We have a group of drivers that deliver.  We are not bound by church membership.  We serve anyone we hear that needs a little extra love.
Food Pantry
Located in First Presbyterian Church in Charleston.  Serving the needy of the area, staffed by volunteers. There is usually a list of needed items in our bulletin. We save drink cans and turn them in to recycle; the money is used to purchase eggs, cheese and margarine for the pantry.
Clothing Closet
Located in basement at St. Mark's in Charleston.  Staffed by volunteers. Clothing is collected regularly to support to local ministry.
West Virginia Harvest
We have a driver that picks up food at the deli in Sissonville and takes it to Sojourner's, our local women's and family homeless shelter.
Snacks for Hospice
We collect wrapped snacks for patients and their families
At Christmas we “adopt “a school
The counselor gives us a list of needy children with suggestions of what they need.
The Disciple Mission Fund is a fund that supports our denominational mission efforts at home and around the world. 10% of our offerings received is sent to support the denomination.
The Disciples of Christ have 5 special offerings during the worship year:
Easter offering supports the general ministries of the church
Pentecost offering supports new church development
Thanksgiving offering supports our 14 affiliated colleges and universities
Christmas offering for the West Virginia Region
Reconciliation offering supports anti-racist pro-reconciliation efforts in our country

disaster relief mission

Our Week of Compassion offerings help fund disaster relief across the world. Week of Compassion works through a remarkable network of church partner organizations and partnerships that insures that our response to humanitarian needs in the world is efficient, effective and faithful. Through these partnerships, Disciples are able to join a tapestry of caring that brings help and hope to hurting people in every corner of the world.

using our physical space for mission

Our physical church building is a 15,600 square foot, two story facility. The upper level is a multipurpose worship space. The lower level is also multipurpose space that includes a kitchen, a large meeting/dining area, classrooms and offices.
Sitting on 1.3 acres, this space is an "oasis in the busy-ness of life." Future development could include playgrounds, prayer gardens, a columbarium, an amphitheater, additional walking trails, and more.
This vision is God-sized and very much beyond us, but know that as others in the greater Kanawha Valley catch this vision with us, that together with God we can make this happen for the betterment of the whole community. This vision has led us to being open to discussions about networking with others in unique ways to make this vision become reality.
Feel free to contact our Senior Pastor, Steven Smith, if you are interested in engaging United in conversation about this vision.
