united disciples of christ

A congregation of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) located in South Charleston, WV

what disciples believe

  • We celebrate the diversity of all people and invite the world as one family of God to gather around the Lord's table. We celebrate Communion every Sunday and welcome all to participate as God has welcomed us.
  • We believe in "the priesthood of all believers." Through the practice of believer's baptism we recognize every person as called to serve God.
  • We celebrate that each person can study and read scripture for themselves. We encourage critical and thoughtful study of scripture, taking into account the context in which it was written. Rather than asking people to maintain beliefs in creedal statements, we honor and respect the personal belief of each believer.
  • We seek to cooperate and partner with other faith communities to bring about wholeness, healing, and justice in the world.
  • We honor Christian unity by convenanting to be in communion with other congregations that make up the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in the United States and Canada.

Core values

Our values are represented by the word FAMILY:
F
aithful Living
Ours  is a simple faith  based  on  unity, freedom and love.  We believe in the unity of all Christians.  We believe that all Christians should be free to read and interpret the Bible for themselves and to build faith based on reason.
Accepting All
We  practice  an  inclusive  ministry.  All of our members are “ministers” and are entitled to interpret the scriptures and perform the ministry of the church.  We support diversity in all of God's people and strive for diversity in our membership.
Making Disciples
We seek to fulfill the great commission to make disciples.  We celebrate the diversity of gifts in people to which God has blessed the church.  We encourage others to discern their gifts, to live into those gifts, to practice the disciplines of the faith which seek understanding and enable people to grow in loving relationship to God.
Inviting Everyone
First and foremost, we believe in welcoming all who believe in Jesus Christ to full participation in the life of the Church.  No one should be excluded.  The central feature of our corporate worship, the Lord’s Supper, is celebrated each Sunday and is open to all, without exception.  We believe that all are invited and welcomed at the table as Christ has invited and welcomed us.
Loving Relationships
We  support  the  right  of each  member  to disagree and debate the great  issues of our time in a spirit of love.  We believe that faith is strengthened through difference of opinion and dialogue.  Our unity is not based upon an unthinking conformity, but  upon  a  healthy  diversity based  on a  common  allegiance  to  Jesus Christ and love for one another.
Yielding to God
We  believe  that  God  speaks to us  today and  is  calling us  to be  a  faithful,  growing  Church  that  demonstrates true community, deep Christian spirituality and  a  passion  for  justice.   Our vision is to become a God-centered,  Spirit-filled  F.A.M.I.L.Y.  of  faith  that  reaches  out  with the love of Jesus Christ to all people.  We seek to fulfill this vision as we yield to God’s will and carry forth our mission to be inviting and accepting of all people into God’s F.A.M.I.L.Y. by connecting, transforming, discipling, and building.
